What is FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method of transferring files from one computer to another. cPanel comes equipped with FTP server software that can be configured to your preference.
An FTP client must be installed on your computer in order to send files to and receive files from the server. Some FTP clients include FileZilla (for Windows®, Linux, and Unix), and Cyberduck (for Mac®).
Why use FTP?
FTP lets you transfer multiple files or even a whole directory of files at one time, rather than one by one.
Add an FTP account
1. Enter the new account’s login name, password, password confirmation, and access directory in the appropriate boxes.
Note: The Strength box will show you the strength of your password choice. If you cannot think of a strong password, click the Password Generator button for an appropriate option.
2. Enter a quota, or click Unlimited.
3. Click Create FTP Account.
The FTP access directory
Please be aware that the new FTP user will have read/write access to the directory you choose and every directory within, allowing the user to add, edit, rename, and remove those files.
- Enter a single forward slash (/) in the directory box to give the new FTP user access to the entire public directory and all directories within.
- Enter a subdomain’s root directory in the directory box to give the new FTP user access to the particular subdomain.
Delete an FTP account
1. Click the Delete icon to the right of the FTP account.
Note: Anonymous accounts, log access accounts, and your main FTP account are essential and cannot be deleted.
2. Select whether you wish to delete only the account’s access (Delete Account), or all files in the account’s directory as well (Delete Account and Files).
